Daniel Cormier believes Jorge Masvidal can leapfrog Colby Covington to earn a welterweight title shot against Leon Edwards.
Masvidal is scheduled to face Gilbert Burns in the co-main event at UFC 287, headlined by the blockbuster middleweight title rematch between Alex Pereira and Israel Adesanya. According to Dana White, Covington is the next in line to fight for the welterweight title, but Cormier thinks ‘Gamebred’ can jump the line with an impressive performance against the Brazilian, despite being on a three-fight losing skid.
Daniel Cormier On Jorge Masvidal
Speaking on his YouTube channel (as transcribed by MMA Junkie), Cormier said that Masvidal can jump the line for a welterweight title fight against Edwards given the history between the two. Back in 2019, the Miami native attacked the Brit with his famous ‘three-piece and a soda’ boxing combo backstage at UFC London.
“If you’re in Miami, it’s going to be a pro-Masvidal crowd,” Cormier said. “He wins, gets in the middle of the Octagon, and tells Joe Rogan, ‘I want Leon Edwards. Come get this biscuit, come get this two-piece.’ Dude, the world’s going to go crazy and Dana will look at that and go, ‘Hey, man – there’s a lot of history to that. (If) this guy wins impressively, with his star power, I could see him right in the conversation for a fight against Leon Edwards.”
Masvidal is currently riding a three fight losing streak, with his most recent loss coming at the hands of Colby Covington at UFC 272 by a comfortable decision.
