Colby Covington has been keeping a low profile ever since he was brutally assaulted by Jorge Masvidal in Miami in March.

Covington last fought at UFC 272, where he secured a comfortable unanimous decision victory against friend-turned-bitter rival, Masvidal. Nearly three weeks later, ‘Chaos’ was ambushed by ‘Gamebred’ outside Papi Steak restaurant in Miami. The former UFC interim welterweight champion was allegedly sucker punched and claimed that the attack broke his tooth, resulted in brain damage, and damaged his $90,000 Rolex.

Masvidal was charged with two felonies but pleaded not guilty to the claims. He is scheduled for a plea hearing on August 17th where it will be determined if a plea deal will be offered and accepted or if the situation will move to trial, which will likely begin on August 29th.

Covington, who’s otherwise in the news regularly, has been keeping a low profile since the incident, and Cormier knows exactly why.

Daniel Cormier On Colby Covington

Speaking on his DC & RC show on ESPN (as transcribed by MMA Mania), Cormier said that Covington is still dealing with some injuries suffered from Masvidal’s brutal attack.

“Colby Covington is dealing with some serious injuries from being brutally attacked on the street by Jorge Masvidal,” Cormier said. “Covington needs to stay away from the public eye and do exactly what he’s doing and while making money (through poker tournaments)? Hats off to Covington. To be attacked in that way, viciously, it would be hard to come back and do other things. Colby Covington is doing what he needs to do, relaxing, playing some cards, and making money. So, it’s a good thing.”
