Frankie Edgar has named a UFC legend as his preferred opponent for his next fight, which he has announced will be his last.

Edgar was brutally knocked out in his last two fights and has won only one out of his last five fights. The former UFC lightweight champion understands that his time in the sport is up, but wants to grace the Octagon one final time before he hangs up his gloves, as per his manager Ali Abdelaziz.

Frankie Edgar On Who He’d Like To Fight Next

During an interview with ESPN’s Brett Okamoto (as transcribed by MMA Fighting), ‘The Answer’ confirmed that he wants to compete one last time, ideally against Dominick Cruz.

“I’m never one to call anybody out or pick anybody, I usually let the UFC and Ali kind of figure that out,” Edgar said. “But I’ll say a name just because I think it’s more of a legacy fight and I know he has a fight coming up and who knows how it could happen, but I think Dominick Cruz. He was a champion at 135 when I was the champion at 155. We were both pretty much top of the division, I think that could be an interesting fight.

“I think that would be cool. It would be a pretty cool sendoff at Madison Square Garden, it’s pretty much in my backyard. I trained up in Renzo [Gracie’s gym in New York] for so many years, it would be a pretty cool sendoff.”

Cruz is currently riding a two fight winning streak, with his most recent victory coming against Pedro Munhoz by unanimous decision at UFC 269. He is scheduled to face Marlon Vera in the UFC San Diego main event on August 13th. With ‘The Dominator’ itching to become a three-time bantamweight champion, he may not be willing to lock horns with Edgar if he wins his next fight.

Edgar won’t have a shortage of options, however.
