Maycee Barber is eyeing double-champ status.
‘The Future’ is gearing up for her comeback in the Octagon against Katlyn Chookagian at UFC 299, where she’ll look to improve to six consecutive wins at flyweight.
At UFC 299 media day, Barber revealed that she plans on moving up to bantamweight if she beats Chookagian, and she ideally wants to battle former champion Julianna Pena.
“I mean, yeah [I’m interested],” Barber said. “I think that the 135-pound division needs excitement, I think a lot of women’s fighting needs excitement and I’m down to be the person that brings that excitement. You know, if I got to fight Julianna Pena, if I got to move up and fight at 135 for a title, like why not?
“We need that [excitement]. I think [what’s next] will depend on the timing. If it’s like, they’re both at the same time, we have to think about that one. But I’d take the easier one, which I think is Julianna, then I’d go and fight Alexa (Grasso). I just don’t think she’s that great of a fighter.”
Pena is still in the recovery phase from a rib injury she suffered while training for her 2023 fight against Nunes, and will most likely make her comeback against newly-crowned 135-pound champion, Raquel Pennington.
