Khamzat Chimaev has revealed that he will undergo surgery following UFC 294, where he suffered a broken hand while fighting Kamaru Usman.
Chimaev made his return to the Octagon after a one-year hiatus, facing the former UFC welterweight champion in a middleweight fight at UFC 294, where the Chechen fighter was pushed to his limit.
Despite the Nigerian having limited preparation time, he gave the UFC’s top star a run for his money, tagging him with big shots in rounds two and three. Nevertheless, ‘Borz’ still managed to secure the victory due to takedowns and control.
After the fight, Chimaev revealed that he had injured his hand in the first round, which is why he failed to fight at the peak of his powers.
Initially, the full extent of the injury was not known. However, Chimaev recently disclosed that he will have to undergo surgery to fix a torn ligament.
“I’m gonna do a surgery, operation, in one-two weeks,” Chimaev said on Instagram Live. “After that, do the recovery, come back, smash somebody.”
Following a hard-fought victory against Usman, Chimaev was the frontrunner to face middleweight champion Sean Strickland in a title fight, but the American will now defend his title against South Africa’s Dricus Du Plessis, who is on an impressive winning streak, with his most recent victory coming against Robert Whittaker.
Who should Khamzat Chimaev fight upon his return to the cage?
