Charles Oliveira and Islam Makhachev face off

Charles Oliveira’s coach Diego Lima believes his pupil deserves the next UFC lightweight title shot against Islam Makhachev.

Oliveira last fought at UFC 300, where his titles hopes were badly dented after losing to Arman Tsarukyan by decision. However, the Brazilian can still get a title opportunity following the Armenian’s recent suspension due to misconduct.

Tsarukyan was suspended and fined $25,000 by the Nevada Athletic Commission for throwing a punch at a fan during his walkout for his fight against Oliveira at UFC 300. The suspension, originally nine months from the incident date, could be reduced to six months if Tsarukyan issues an anti-bullying public service announcement approved by the commission. This would make him eligible to return to action on October 12.

The Armenian is hopeful of making a return to the Octagon by October, when Makhachev ideally wants to fight as well. But in case Arman fails to return before the end of this year, Oliveira will be more than happy to fight for the title.

In a recent interview with Ag Fight, Oliveira’s coach Lima explained why he thinks his pupil is the best choice to challenge Islam Makhachev for the lightweight title next.

“Both Charles and I want the belt,” Lima said. “Now with Arman suspended, there would be no name other than Charles Oliveira…Poirier just fought, Gaethje also got knocked out. So the truth is that with Arman out of the game I believe there is no one at 155 to fight Makhachev other than Charles. So it’s certainly what we want, it’s what Charles wants.”

Oliveira fought Makhachev for the vacant belt at UFC 280 in October, 2022, when he was choked out in the second round. The pair was booked for a rematch at UFC 294, but the Brazilian pulled out of it due to an injury.
