Charles Oliveira has his eye on the lightweight title

Charles Oliveira is ready to do whatever it takes to get his hands on the UFC lightweight title again.

Oliveira last fought Islam Makhachev for the vacant lightweight title fight at UFC 280, where he was dominated in the first round before being submitted in the second. The former kingpin doesn’t like making excuses and admitted that his rival deserved to win the battle, but the war is not over yet.

Charles Oliveira On Winning The Belt Again

In an interview with Sports Illustrated, Oliveira promised that he will regain his throne very soon.

“A hurt lion is still a lion,” Oliveira said. “He will continue hunting. That is what I am doing. I will keep working to get the belt back. I want it like I’ve never had it before… It wasn’t my night. He [Makhachev] was better than I was. I’m here. Anything can happen. I’m working to become champion again.”

Oliveira will have his chance to make a strong statement when he locks horns with Beneil Dariush, and then face either Islam Makhachev or Alex Volkanovski, who will battle for lightweight glory at UFC 284. Giving his thoughts on the matchup, ‘Do Bronx’ said that whichever of the two succeeds in imposing his game will prevail come fight night.

“Islam will try to take it to the ground,” Oliveira said. “Volkanovski will try to keep the fight standing. It is a style fight, and whoever’s style is predominant will win… Our sport is ungrateful. You can’t play around. The sport will make him pay for it if he does [underestimate Volkanovski], but I don’t think he is, especially in his first title defense.”
