Gilbert Burns has pointed out the mistake that led to his knock out loss at the hands of Jack Della Maddalena at UFC 299.

‘Durinho’ made his return to the Octagon after almost a year to take on Maddalena at UFC 299, where he was leading on two judges’ scorecards at the end of round two. In the third round, however, Burns’ takedown attempt turned into a nightmare as the Aussie caught him with a brutal a knee and finished him with ground and pound.

Following his defeat, Burns issued a statement on his Instagram, acknowledging that the knockout was caused by a major error on his part.

“Felt great in there! Put on a great training camp and a good strategy, unfortunately it’s the fight game made a bad decision and paid for it! And I was very happy to be in there! Shoutout to Jack Della on a great win! No excuses, just greatfull to God, for my family, my team, my friends my sponsors, supporters and to all the fans time to rest and expend a quality time with my family. See you guys soon!,” Burns wrote.

Following a stunning knockout win against Burns, Maddalena is now eyeing a number one contender’s fight against Shavkat Rakhmonov, who is more than willing to put the rising contender in his place.
